What will be your personal Legacy?

One day, someone will summarise your life with a sentence or at best a paragraph. What they will write will be a product of looking at your life and summarising it. Every one of us can, however, determine ahead of what that summary would be, by having a personal legacy statement and living to fulfill it.

What will your personal legacy be? What are you living for? Believe me, if people talk about your life and they talk about how much money you made, how big your house was, or the car you drove, you must mean you didn’t live for anything worthwhile. Unfortunately, we are so caught by survival, that we often neglect the most important things.

Here are a few legacy statements from a few popular people that I personally find inspiring.

Mahatma Gandhi

Legacy Statement: “My life is my message.”
Gandhi’s legacy is rooted in his commitment to nonviolent resistance, justice, and equality.

Nelson Mandela

Legacy Statement: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal that I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
Mandela’s legacy is characterized by his struggle against apartheid and his efforts to unite a divided nation.

Martin Luther King Jr.

Legacy Statement: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Dr. King’s legacy is defined by his leadership in the civil rights movement and his vision of racial equality.

Steve Jobs

Legacy Statement: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
Steve Jobs’ legacy is marked by his innovation, entrepreneurship, and transformation of the technology industry.

Oprah Winfrey

Legacy Statement: “The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.”
Oprah’s legacy includes her trailblazing career, philanthropy, and efforts to inspire and uplift people worldwide.

Albert Einstein

Legacy Statement: “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”
Einstein’s legacy is founded on his revolutionary contributions to physics and his advocacy for scientific exploration.

These legacy statements reflect the profound impact these individuals have had on society, and they continue to inspire generations to come. Your personal legacy statement is a chance to define the mark you want to leave on the world, just as these famous figures did.
