One of the concepts I price highly is freedom. I don’t know if it is the most important concept in the world, but bondage and slavery seem the most horrible. I have always fought for freedom since I was a toddler, so I guess it’s something I’m quite passionate about, and I think everyone should too. We all crave freedom.
Freedom is a concept that refers to the ability to act, speak, and think without being constrained by external forces such as coercion, oppression, or tyranny. It involves the absence of physical, social, or political restrictions that limit a person’s ability to make choices and pursue their goals. Freedom is a complex and multifaceted concept that can be understood in various ways, depending on cultural, historical, and philosophical perspectives.
In case you are wondering why a free man is talking about freedom, let me share some of the areas of freedom that I have contemplated and fought for freedom in.
Freedom from Bullies – My battle with bullies was very early. Based on my vertical constraints, I was typically the smallest in my class from nursery school, and this made me an easy target for bullies. Long before I got the sense, I had enough sense to fight for my right to be in class without being oppressed by anyone. I learned how to use fingernails, pocket money, and other children as tools to fight bullies and gain freedom!
Freedom from NEPA – This was a freedom I obtained with inverters 15 years ago. I wasn’t comfortable with ever being able to say things were not done because there was no light in my house. I wanted to have the liberty to do all I needed to do, when I wanted to do it, all the time. Long before it became as popular as it is today, even when I couldn’t even afford a good car, I had an inverter in the house and in the car. This gave me work freedom!
Financial Freedom – All who know me and met me in seminars for the last 15 years have most likely heard about financial freedom from me. It’s a state in life where what you earn without working can take care of your living expenses. This liberty sets you free from working something you need to do compulsorily into work becoming an option. Financial freedom takes work and time, but it is achievable. There are different degrees of freedom, and I enjoy some degree of this. I’m not living my dreams, but I don’t need a job to live decently.
Freedom from the local network – Just yesterday I experienced what it feels like to be free from local internet providers and free from mobile telecommunication companies. The Starlink project of Elon Musk is really revolutionary and a step in moving the world to be even closer knit together. All you need to do is get your dish to face the skies, and you can have your best internet access yet. The extra beauty of this is that it is mobile and that mobility is not just over a few distances, you can use it in Lagos, using the same device in Uyo and unplugging it to use in Katsina.
And yes, the freedom I am most excited about. Freedom from sin, freedom from the curse of the law, freedom from the law of sin and death. I have been set from the tyranny of being unable to control my impulses, free from the nature of a sinner, and free to serve God in a way that is acceptable to him.
Have you tasted some of these freedoms? Would you love to be free?
Kind Regards,
Adeolu Akinyemi.
