Today is day 29 of the gratitude challenge that I have done throughout the month of March. I didn’t do it alone; there were about 100 people who started this with me. Some are still firing on with 29/29, and some are not so perfect, but they have been faithful for more than 2/3 of the time. There is another group, however, who couldn’t keep up. I believe everyone needs to access and determine what level of accountability and camaraderie works for them.
The last 29 days have been amazing for me. Whereas I don’t have a list of 100 things to be grateful for the whole of 2022, in this month of march alone, with 5 things to be grateful for every day, I now have over 140 things to be grateful for. The last 29 days have been without complaints. Who has time to complain when you are busy looking out for what to be grateful for? It’s been a great month for me, with so many goals accomplished and so much good news that wasn’t even planned for. Personally, it’s been a great month for me.
For others, it’s been quite a blessing too. With testimonies being shared daily. We batched people into smaller groups, and some groups have been fantastic. Some groups go the extra mile by reminding their group members not to forget their gratitude challenge. As we have praised and appreciated God for the things He is doing in our lives, we have received His help for things that were yet to be done. We have all learnt how to thank God in advance for the things we have prayed for, and even that has seen amazing results.
In case anyone else wants to run a gratitude challenge, you can borrow our template. We had five things to do habitually every day.
1. Journal – Write at least 3-5 things you are grateful for every day. I got a book for this, never been so consistent
2. Keep Gratitude Reminders around you all day – I did this with alarms on my phone
3. Confess scriptures that show the benefit of praising God and worshipping him.
4. Send a gratitude note to someone daily – Really rich letters. My life has been blessed by writing
5. Pray for others daily – Very refreshing too
I honestly don’t feel like stopping. The whole purpose was to make it a habit, and I think I’m nearly there. Gratitude needs to be a daily part of our lives. The benefits are so rich, and we only sabotage ourselves when we don’t live like this. So, I am definitely continuing, but in a more interesting way.
At the close of this challenge, I realized that the key concepts around which God led us to teach all form an interesting whole. The key concepts were branded 5G: Gratitude, Generosity, Goal Orientation, Goodness and Greatness. The whole they form is that these five attitudes combine together to form one key attitude – LOVE. When you show love to someone, you will find that you will serve them, which is greatness; you will be good to them, which is goodness; you will be goal oriented about it, meaning you will not just do what you do without purpose, you will be generous to them, and your generosity will be from a place of gratitude to God for what He has done for you. I was thrilled to realise that love encapsulated the 5Gs.
In view of this discovery, I’ll be upgrading my challenge in the month of April into a love challenge. It will be an upgrade on the gratitude challenge. The starting point is realising that people show love because it’s in their plan to do it, not because they spontaneously did it. The priest and the Levite who saw the wounded man and left him for the Good Samaritan were not evil people, they are people like us, who often don’t do what they didn’t plan to do. To take action for people, it needs to start with having a goal. So, we’ll have a goal of doing good to at least one person daily. Here are the proposed highlights
1. Journal daily on – What are you grateful for? Who did you bless/serve today? What did you give today?
2. Keep Love Reminders around you all-day
3. Confess scriptures that claim the benefits of those busy loving others (include the 5Gs)
4. Write a gratitude note and do a good, great and generous deed
5. Pray for Specific people daily
If we do this well, we’ll have spent 30 days loving people, and I dare say your life will not remain the same. Our Gratitude Challenge group will wind down after day 30, but if you want to join our 30 days love challenge.
