On sunday I chatted with a friend who told me he was making well over 100% returns on making some particular investments. He started out loosing some money, but now he had made it all back and was acing good pay. He also showed me some he was about to get into which had prospects of yeilding about 150 to 200%. It was exciting! Ofcourse we sat down together and talked well about it, and I looked for opportunities to cash in myself. The most interesting thing however, was the we had this conversation in front of a bookshop. We both are people who get very impulsive in making investments into ourselves. We talked about a number of books, work, life, career, money, culture and other things. I bought a book, my 3rd one this month. The greatest investment you can ever make in yourself is to buy books and read them. There is a collection here. You can also link to the page under About Adeolu, the page that says Buy a book today. Here are some things books can do for you.

They can help you ACE your next Interview

They can help you perform better at your job

They can help you clench a business deal

They can make you experts on particular topics

They can shorten the price you’ll pay in the school of hard knocks

They can help you live healthier

They can help you avoid the price of ignorance

They can help you sustain that conversation with your new found friend

They can help you become wiser

They can help you pass time becoming better

They can fuel you with fresh confidence

They can make you more aware

They can make you see more in you that you already see

They can make you aware that your excuses are not original

They can take you around the world in one sitting, and bring you back better

You know the first writer in all history? Well in my history books, God. You know the first published book? The Bible. Writing and reading are divine ideas. One sure formular to becoming great, is to read a book a day, and if you can afford it, buy, else borrow… of course return it.

If you really want a book and don’t have time to go to bookshops, go to this site http://deoluakinyemi.com/buy-a-book-today/

If you are in Lagos you will get it wherever you are. If you are outside Lagos, you might need to pay an extra token. Keep reading!

    I quite agree with you!
I believe the most profitable venture is investing in acquiring knowledge.

I do agree with acquiring knowledge, but acquiring knowledge without ever applying it is a total waste and it would be better not to have know.
what I have a problem with us as Nigerians is if there was ever an olympics of debates we would win hands down, but when it comes to actually get our hands dirty and applying ourselves in all our postulations we are no where to be found.
so acquirer your knowledge and be ready to apply and implement it.

    stay blessed all.

Reading is the easiest way to gain access into the world of successful and rich people, to understand their thinking pattern and apply it for results. It is priceless.

@Emma – Truth. It’s not the books, its application, truth.
@Angela – I agree with you as well, we have what it takes to win arguments…but can we translate it to action? What in your opinion is responsible for this? Is it who we are, or is it something we ought to fix. Its so interesting we find ourselves trapped in two extremes, knowledge that puffs up and ignorance that causes poverty.

@Ase, where do I start, cos it is not a very simple or straight forward answer.
I believe it’s cultural, without throwing the baby with the bath water…we elevate knowledge not application or skills.
The Educational system assumes we all learn the same way..sitting in a class and being talk at, expecting and encouraging memorising without actually relating. Not ever one learns that way, some people are doers, thinker or even both. But when none of this are identified and encourged we get only one side educated…THE ACQUIRING knowledge side.
The applications and purpose of the Knowledge is not give the same amount to be expressed.

Polytechnic are looked down on, I actually prefer them, they are more hands on and practical. Everyone want to be call a degree holder (the certificate) and lack experience to work in that field after graduation.
The Academics are elevated….and does, more particle and skilled are not encouraged, and then you wonder why we are left a country of intellectual poor men.
Ase I could go on..but I’ll leave it here for now.

I believe that there is immense value in reading. There is a healthy release of latent energy in consuming other people’s ideas. I’m not sure I totally agree with the call for application. If you read enough, it will definitely break out as action, might take time, but it will happen. Even faith in God comes by a constant exposure to his principles. It is inadequate knowledge that puffs up. Real and deep knowledge is humbling. (He that thinks he knows does yet know as he should know).

Reading creatively influences your mind and sublimely drives your life.

    Hmm Angela,

Insightful. I agree with you that our learning system expects swallow and regurgitate. It is truely a system that allows learning for learnings sake.

True talk about the concept of the polytechnics, but the interesting thing is that it seems strange but there seems to be a preference for Bachelor degree holders in the job market. I have wondered at this, as a skill versus knowledge arguement, but the fact I see staring me in the eye is the fact that not many people desire to originally go to polytechnics, hence our polytechnics which build skills have fast been turned into a dumping ground for wannabe’s who go there to avoid the excuse of staying at home. Certainly there are great people in Polytechnics, and I have met a great deal of them, but the output these days have usually been a function of the input.

The best experience in these institutions as I see it is the informal educational sector produced by social campus life.

@Rotimi – interesting thought…but I believe true…life is governed by thought, and thought can be redirected by reading. Hence if you take the diligence to give your mind good food, acting it out is only a matter of time.

@bily, the dummy series are good, and I think for just 2,800 you can have that one delivered to your doorstep ๐Ÿ™‚
