Proverbs is a book of wisdom that provides valuable insights into various aspects of life, including business. Here are some key principles from Proverbs that can guide business success. I have also added a few contemporary examples to make them relatable.

1. Hard work: “Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth” (Proverbs 10:4).

One of the key ingredients to business success is hard work. Successful entrepreneurs understand that building a business requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to put in long hours. For example, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is known for his relentless work ethic, often putting in 12-hour days and working on weekends to build his business into the giant it is today.

2. Integrity: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity” (Proverbs 11:3).

Integrity is another important aspect of business success. Customers and investors want to do business with companies that are honest and trustworthy. One example of a company with a strong reputation for integrity is Patagonia, an outdoor clothing brand that is committed to sustainable and ethical practices. The company has built a loyal customer base by being transparent about its environmental impact and taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint.

3. Wise planning: “In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

Successful business leaders understand the importance of planning and setting goals. They also recognize that there are external factors beyond their control that can impact their plans. For example, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is known for his ambitious plans to revolutionize transportation and colonize Mars. While some of Musk’s plans have faced setbacks, he continues to adapt and pivot as needed to achieve his long-term goals.

4. Humility: “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2).

Humility is an important trait for business leaders to cultivate. It allows them to admit their mistakes, learn from feedback, and stay open to new ideas. The current trend in the business landscape is finally catching up with God’s word as people move from the heroic CEO to the humble CEO.  One example of a humble business leader is Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft. Nadella is known for his collaborative leadership style and his focus on empowering employees to innovate and drive the company’s growth.

5. Generosity: “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly but comes to poverty” (Proverbs 11:24).

Generosity is an important trait for business leaders to cultivate, both in their personal and professional lives. Giving back to the community and supporting charitable causes can help entrepreneurs build goodwill and foster loyalty among customers and employees. One example of a generous business leader is Marc Benioff, the founder of Salesforce. Benioff has donated millions of dollars to various charitable causes and has built a culture of giving back within his company.

The insights in the book of Proverbs are timeless and can guide business success in any era. Even when the world does not align in one season, it always comes back o these principles. By embracing hard work, integrity, wise planning, humility, and generosity, entrepreneurs can build successful businesses that make a positive impact on the world.
