Dear Entrepreneur, is that business you are doing worth it?

There are many types of businesses, and they are all so attractive. If you are a business student like me, you will get to analyse a number of businesses, and you may feel drawn to quite a number of them. This usually is very exciting, looking at the concepts of various businesses, but you can’t do all of them now, can you? You need to focus on one and build it; otherwise, you will become a jack of all trades and master of none.

As the famous proverb goes, “If you want something done right, do it yourself.” This holds true when it comes to investing your money. Instead of spreading your resources thin by investing in various ventures, you have no control over, it is better to pour your energy and finances into your own business. The driving idea here is, do you trust yourself, and is your business worth it?

Once you begin to make money in business, the lure of diversification of investments takes entrepreneurs in many directions.  A lot of shiny objects and ideas pop up, promising serious returns on investment in record time. Some of these things are only juicy because you haven’t taken the time to really evaluate the potential of your business. Most people are too focused on surviving in the short term that they fail to see the possibilities of what is in their hands.

The Story of many tech startups comes to mind. Look at Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Mark had the vision to invest all his time, energy, and money into his own business, and look where it is now. What could Mark have invested his money into that would be worth anything close to $400 Billion today? People who invested their $1m in Facebook are worth billions today.

I am not saying that investing is bad; it sure makes sense to diversify one’s portfolio. As the saying goes, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” but in the case of investing in your own business, putting all your eggs in one basket can lead to a bountiful harvest. In fact, the real saying ought to be, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket except it’s the one you are guarding with your life – your business.

In short, investing in your own business not only allows you to have control over the outcome but also allows you to pour your passion and creativity into making it a success. So, trust yourself and your abilities and invest in your own business.

Best of luck in your entrepreneurial journey!

Kind Regards,
