ReBuilding Nigeria!

What I want to write today is an article I will love you to pirate. I’ll like you to dub it, and put it on your blog post. Modify it if you like, give me credit if you want, or give me none at all. They say we’ll achieve a lot more if we don’t care who gets the credit.

I have refrained deliberately for a long time to make any comments about our National Rebranding exercise. I hope I will be able to say what boils in my throat and wrists tonight, without making too much reference to it. For all it’s worth though, I think the fundamental error I can see, is that Nigerians have not been made to own it, and hence rather than having people championing it, and helping others buy in, what we have is criticism and condemnation by the same people who would have been it’s champions.

Having said that however, I have a proposition of an exercise that we can own as Nigerians. It’s a simple idea and it came as a fallout of a discussion that ensued in my office yesterday.  It’s an answer of what we can do to focus our leaders on the problems that we have as citizens and to assist them in giving it the attention it deserves. We no longer need any assitance from any source to know that our most crucial problem in Nigeria is Leadership! If we are all on the same page in this realization, then our efforts towards a better Nigeria must be channeled to support, focus and direct our leaders.

I remember shortly before the elections last year I wrote an article I titled, “Power is all we need!”  I pleaded with our would be leaders not to promise us roads or education, but to promise us just one thing – Power!  That if in any leaders 4yrs we can celebrate 1yr of uniterupted power supply, then we should imortalize that president. Haven been to Egypt now to watch tombs, I say we must do the same, but before they die however.

First for the nation, then the states, then our local governments. Once we have a new president for example, we should as a nation analyze our most significant problem that we want solved in his or her tenure. After we have agreed on this problem, we should then go ahead and give that problem the same name with our president. We should substitute the name of our leader with this problem in our conversations, in our articles in newspapers, in our slang’s, in our music and drama. We should do this per state and per local government as well.

Let’s say for example that we have discovered that our biggest problem in Nigeria is Electricity, and for example that our president’s name for the tenure was Yaradua. Then everytime light goes, every time we are in darkeness, everytime we have any issues, our conversations should be like this.

When it is bad as it is – “Chai, Yaradua has gone again”, “Ah, we have not had Yaradua for the last 2 days”, “This Yaradua is so unstable”, “Ah what did we do today oh, we have half Yaradua today”,” What’s wrong with you, you are complaining that you haven’t seen Yaradua for 3 days, what about people that haven’t seen Yaradua for one year! or ever!”, “I wasn’t able to do it overnight, because Yaradua kept fainting”, “We have been using Yaradua as backup to our Generator”, “Iron your shirts, Yaradua may soon go oh”, ”

When this start becoming good – ” Up Yaradua!”, “Yaradua is really trying oh, we are not where we want to be, but we are far from where we were”, “Yaradua has been consistent for the past 24hrs”, “Ah, we need to celebrate 1yr of uninterrupted Yaradua”, “Yaradua is so much better these days”, “With Yaradua so constant, Nigeria is really becoming the most desirable nation to live in on earth”. “Yaradua is constant in all the states of Nigeria and the structures are in place to get Yaradua into all the local governments.”

Can you for your own new ones?

If we keep speaking this way, our leaders will know that we mean business with our desire for solutions. The next president will also know that one critical unsolved problem will bear his name until it’s solved. I recommend, that whichever president fixes electric power be given the opportunity to forever bear the same name with electricity in Nigeria and be forever immortalized in the lips and minds of  Nigerians.  The same for every future identified problem.  A similar approach should be taken to the state levels. Whatever problem we align and identify must be instantly changed to the name of the Governor. If the issue in Lagos for example was Transportation and assuming the Governor was Fashola, then by now, people should be saying “Fashola is getting better in Lagos now”, or ” I entered one wrong fashola and they collected my phone and laptop.” or “Big Fashola (BRT) is actually making life easy for Lagosians”. We can identify the states one by one and identify the problems that need to be solved and replaced with their name.

My people say that whatever hurts one, must be primary in one’s conversation – “Oun to ba duni lo n po loro eni”

If you use this on your blog, just put a litte comment here saying you are using it so I can follow on to your site and register my solidarity. I think this is something that we the people can own and gradually take things to the way things should be. We deserve more than what we are getting, and UNTIL we the people are clear about what we want and about our commitment to make sure it happen, then nothing happens. Let’s make this happen!

Now I really need to sleep before Yarauda’ goes!

I love this!..what we speak becomes our reality..so if any person in authority does not want to be so branded..then they must know why they are in position of leadership, so if they can not see themselves delivering on what they promised during election..then they should do the honorable thing and resign!..i have heard about the rebranding but do not understand it fully..all i can say about any rebranding is everyone must see himsef/herself in it..i still think of Idiagbon and Buhari Era..though short lived but order was gradually being restored to Nigeria..if that had been maybe by now..we wont be where we are with so much disorder and chaos around us..if we can follow through with one thing at a time..say light..and its decided no body uses generator or be given special light line..so we see Nigeria the way..it truly is..from Aso rock to street corners..am sure, we will think clearly from top down and do something permanent about it..God bless Nigeria and help us all..as nobody will come and build the country for us but ourselves..it will be on my blog and some group discussion boards on face book!..God bless you

What tremendous opportunities Nigeria as a nation present to her leaders! Chai! Opportunities to engrave their steps on stones. Opportunities to be celebrated eternally like Abraham Lincoln, Luther Martin King among others. Our eyes are so dim to material gains of now that we trade off our future. The future of glory and honour. One thing i am so sure of is this. Nigeria will definitely be great and become enviable among the nations. What our leaders should be concerned about is what will they be remembered for?

    God bless Nigeria.

Adeolu, Adeolu, Adeolu !!! ……….. i’m short of words, you are a genius. I’m totally in love with this your re-branding idea, i think it will go a long way to impact a positive movement.

As for government re-branding project, unless the government change their direction immediately the end result of the project is already clear the only painful thing for me there again is that they would have spent so much money uselessly.

Thumps up brother, let’s keep doing what we can.

    Really profound.

    Learning points for me:
    1. Rebuild before you re-brand
    2. Own your problem or at least give it a name; it makes it easier to resolve to solve them.

I’m off to use this on my blog.

I just pray by all means we should get it right now. The means notwithstanding as long as it is legal. using Yaradua of fashola only works where the individual has ears and is willing to listen.
But let us start from somewhere. May be this can do the magic. Some have already taken immunity not to listen. It is like a yoruba drummer saying ” gba ekan mo eti ma so pe o gbo’ which may be translated as ‘put a stuff, wool in you ears, pretend as if you do not hear’.

The dirt on the image of Nigeria is thick and tough, a gently brush won’t do it, a beautiful logo and slogan would only call attention to the stains, and make those less visible to become more apparent, only a hard scrub would work here.

What a novel approach this is!
The challenge now is how to ensure that the president’s name becomes synonymous with the problem(s) on the lips and minds of the populace. Let me suggest that you use your connections to set-up street interviews with AIT (aka people’s parliament) where the interviewees will so use the name yaradua while discussing such problems that the interviewer would ask them what that means…lol. Just my humble opinion.
I will post it on my blogas well!

    @Olaito

They will hear, we need to carry it to the newspaper online sections and drop the thoughts. Once we get this printed out in the conventional news media, we get it out on Radio and TV, we have begun a brand and build campaign.

Imagine what effect this will have if it’s the language of the country, in music in home video, slangs, e.t.c.

Interestingly, by a stroke of miracle, Yaradua has been on and working fine in my office area since morning. I pray Yaradua keeps it up, and I seriously hope that Yaradua will be functioning in my area when I get back home.

Its interesting how we can be so cosmetic in our approach in this nation. Our problems stare us in the face and the best our leaders can come up with is some(not so beautiful) logo and some slogan. Well like you rightly pointed out, Adeolu, everyone in this country knows our major problem is a lack of visionary leadership.

I believe these are the days when Davids, who have been groomed by God in the backside of the desert, take their position, falling Golaith of Gath and his brothers and many cousins.

I believe now is the time for us to, beyond all the infrastructural change, begin to invest in the development of the people. When Josiah got on the throne to lead Israel one of the things he did was embark on an educational campaign for the people. Its time for us to begin to re-educate our people on the true values of effective living.

One of the reason things haven’t worked in Nigeria is our lack of responsibility. When we take responsibility, we then really begin to live. Not that our leaders (and even followers) have not had their responsibilities but there has not been a system of accountability so an LG chairman does not make drains available in a place like Abule Oki, Iyana paja and no one holds him responsible for it. We cannot continue to do ‘siddon-look’ and expect change. Our actions and inaction have consequences.

Oh let’s I forget, kudos to Yaradua in my area o. He’s resident in my area and rarely takes visits out of my area. Max like 3 hours or so. Up Yaradua!!!!

Any other ideas for what to use the names of the other Governors for, a few ideas.
Goodluck – Half Current (Since he’s Vice President)
Fashola – Vote Between: Security (Negative can be, Fashola’s boys attacked someone, positive can be Fashola has been very tight lately) vs Traffic

Any Ideas for the others? We can add a few ministers as well.

I hope that’s a negative feedback, cos I like the way you have summarized it, but now we need examples to cut across different states and ministries. I think you over simplified it just a bit though. It’s not achievement we want personified, it’s our number 1 problem at the time of their election we want to personify, that way they get to focus on what we the people want 🙂

Few things saddens and confounds me more than the positive, patient attitude of the average Nigerian in the midst of a crushingly negative environment. I just hope that when things finally “changes” (there I go hoping again!) we will erect our National monument not to any leader, but to the average Naija who “unreasonably” kept hope alive. Our sense of patience is spartan indeed.

    @ All,

A friend just brought this to my notice yesterday, did you know that 99% of people that tweet with the keyword Nigeria are complaining about Nigerians scamming? Every 5 mins there is atleast one twitterer complaining. For Example

“received email from friend – she’s stuck in Nigeria and needs me to wire her £2,600. Her English has strangely deteriorated too…”
“can anyone tell me why people have to lie and cheat to get something? If I have another person ask me to ship to Nigeria I will scream!”
“@kellysims you should always check your spam folders… lots of cool stuff in there. Just today I got a new friend from Nigeria”
“Been getting lots of Nigeria spam in my work e-mail lately”

Nigeria’s number 1 image problem is scam and I think we should find one of our ministers to personify with this. I am not comfortable with this appellation and don’t think any sensible person should. The Government via the right ministries ought to make a bold statement about this – We are gradually becoming the headquarters of scamming in the world. It’s embarrassing.

The scamming thing is scary..! its affecting us in so many ways especially the Nigerians that are living outside the country..even Oprah Winfrey show had an episode where an investigation was done by a white journalist and they showed where a cybercafe was being raided by the police!.. We are not the poorest country on planet earth, so why are some of us bent on self destructive habits that is not only affecting them but others that are not into it..truly na brother of thief de shame and not thief himself!..i am “shamified” by this 419 status..i tell most of them when i receive their mails that they can do well as script writers, if they persist and come up with the incredible stories they use in defrauding their greedy victims!,,my bro story for another day!..my only consolation recently was the Benard Madoff story and his scam that has almost crippled the american economy..i have used it recently on some Americans that one Madoff and his cohorts does not make all americans or corporate americans scammers..so those 419 should not be used to judge me and other genuine Nigerians..it hit home!..so hopefully i will let Oprah know this too!lol..use Governors in Nigeria that have squandered tax payers money to brand 419..i.e the governor that spent over 200 million marrying the President’s daughter..past governors too that were known for dubiously spending state monies should be so brandied!..God help Nigeria!

This scam thing is disturbing, to say the list. The latest trend is that all other African countries now claim to be Nigerian’s when they get caught. It is getting increasingly unpopular to be called Nigerians particularly outside Nigeria. But that’s what we are and we are not going to let some few crooks run us out of our country. Deolu I must say your idea is novel and very commendable. We need to personalize these challenges and i agree. On the rebranding issue dont you think it would be better to make your geniune suggestions on possible ways of making it more effective as against outright loss of confidence? I am of the opinion that one great obstacle to transformation in Nigeria is the overly critical nature of the Citizens of this country. We pick holes alot and never see hope or positive results. Like some one said recently we all have P.hD’s (Pull Him/her Down Syndrome) as a people and i think its not good. No effort is 100% perfect, yes we can positively criticize and give constructive inputs on how to better that policy as against out rightly condeming it. We need a paradignm shift in this area. Not all leaders have wrong motives. many of them set out to make positive inputs but we dont give them a chance. For instance I personnally didnt vote Fashola and i was of the opinion he was going to be a stooge but he has show an uncommon tenacity for excellence and i am humbled. I will do anything to assist him excel even from obscurity. I no longer view him with suspicion even if i dont agree with some of his approach i rather push forward my perspective to getting it better rather than complaining. So Mr D push your thoughts through. I dont need to tell you that your thoughts may just get a hearing. You sure know better than me.

I do not think there is anything wrong guys if we also decide to use the Rebrand Nigeria logo and slogans on our personal effects. Do I mean that is all we needed to change a nation – NO!

AmenAs per the nation called Nigeria Our Motherlandi strongly believe that the youth have a great role to play towads the making of a decent and impactful future. I know with other youth like you probably holding our own conference that will not be government sponsored or any political connections some of Nigeria’s problem will be made open, discussed and concrete solutions given to them. My brother, Adeolu I have registered to join the future movement early today and i shall love to meet you one on one to give you my other suggestions and ideas about our dear nation and the future of the youth. On the issue of rebuilding/rebarnding Nigeria & THE Yar udua (PHCN) issue it, I find out that we live in a country where people in authority are heartless, callous, inhuman and deliberately suffering the poor masses, ofcourse this is very common among African leaders. Imagine how many years will it take Nigeria to fix the Power problem, fix the problem of unemployment among the youth, fix, agriculture problem, tackle security poblem etc. Let themgive a name to all the problems it is only whne they are “fired up” or held ransome that the government will try to give little attention to the plight of the masses. @ Deolu, I’m glad you are bringing attention it;….Nigerian Scams! that phrase will probably be in the next edition of the Oxford Dictionary or World encyclopedia, It’s already a commonly used phrase in the western media whenever they write about fraud, I do not blame them. Try googling the word “Nigeria” and google will offer “Nigerian scam” as one of the top five results or suggestions for your search. Indians caught the IT bug and turned their nation into an oasis of IT knowlegde and legitimate IT businesses. Nigeria caught the IT bug and…well we all can see the effect… just glance around you if you are reading this from a Cyber cafe, you cannot miss the scam ambassadors. Our society failed decades ago, our values eroded by a rushing stream of easy oil money and vulgar spending, these are the results. Unfortunately for us, we are still ruled by the same generation of laggards who do not seem to see beyond their noses. Rebranding? Psst…. I just hope my generation will get angry enough one day and stop being so patient else our children will accuse us of the same too.

Before i go far Deolu nice piece, but this is not the first time articles like this will be written or some problems or achievements will be immortalised,i quess the problem we have in Nigeria is a cosmetic world,I cant count the number of committes or programme that has been implemented or inaugurated to tackle one problem or the other but how many of these programmes really get the light of the day,we are so inconsistent in Nigeria even with this campaign of immortalising this or that i can bet you that it will start now but will soon fade off, soon even among some of the commentators here,my question is how consistent can we be with the things we believe so much in,how sincere can we be with ourselves, for the little i understand generally the leaders we have have turned deaf ears to most things said and have closed their eyes to see the reality of the problems inherent,so where do we go?what do we want to re-brand,a product that as already lost value why not rather re-brand the ingredients that make up this product and i quess that should be U & I,this is what i thing we need to first promote.

Hmm, here we go again talking about rebuilding and rebranding Nigeria.
The idea of naming our leaders by their impact is great. For instance, I live and work in Abuja and the big buses (BRT) are simply called EL-RUFAI here in Abuja. You hear something like Are u going home by El-Rufai or your car… El-Rufai introduced the mass transit system and he is now named by it…solving transportation problem in Abuja.

But wait a minute my brother, what do we do to those who cause us the greatest havoc as a nation and start problems that is still plaguing us. I think if we name them too by the problems they caused, it might serve as a deterrent to others. How does this sound? May we not have another Iwu by 2011…can somebody say Amen!

Nice, nice however, i have a slight twist to it, rather than “…we should as a nation analyze our most significant problem that we want solved in his or her tenure.” we should allow the leader (per time) to be the one to choose which ‘problem’ they would tackle in their tenure (afterall, they are to ‘lead’ us) only, each leader should tackle only one problem per time till that problem is solved before moving on to something else.

But then, you just might have a point to think, some of them leaders might be mis-guided on the problem to tackle. Afterall what does Akunyuli think she is doing re-branding Nigeria when she can get the Freedom of Information Bill passed?

Wow!!! this sounds like a really “crazy” idea, but you see, I do believe that if we must actually solve Nigeria’s problems, we need to make such “crazy” and unconventional moves as this. History itself gives us proof that this works, IF we can keep at it and not slack. Great idea!

By the way,I’d to stay back after church service today to do some work (including this) because obviously, Yaradua might not (infact, WONT) be in my house till only God knows when. hahahahah – this should work. Shared on http://www.gloriousolutionscentre.com/blog

On more thing i need to add…

Amidst all the talks, it is time that New Naija Club, The Future Movement etc and the Minister of Information & Communication herself get to actions that will bring about the rebuilding of Nigeria’s image…WHAT IS WORTH DOING AT ALL IS WHAT OVERDOING EXCELLENTLY WELL…I believe this is what @Glorious meant by “…IF we can keep at it and not slack.”

    God Bless Nigeria
    God Bless NNC
    God Bless everyone

@Rethots. Your point sounds good but the process of governance is more complicated than what you said. A leader or President of a nation may not be able to face only one problem at a time before going to another one. The most feasible thing is to have a Develpoment Plan that can be followed even when he no longer in office…In Obama’s words to Mc Cain, A PRESIDENT MUST BE ABLE TO DO MORE THAN ONE THING AT A TIME.

    Imagine!

There has not been Yaradua in my neighbourhood for the past two weeks. This has hindered me in so many ways that i just manage daily to be online while running on generators..I can’t just imagine the amount of naira people spend on fuel or diesel just to have Yaradua..

    When will this get better?

Anyway, my prayer is that the Yaradua (epileptic or total blackouts) we see today, we shall see him no more in the nearest future. This shall be a tale of the past. Our children will wonder if it is true that we had issues with Yaradua.

    I must confess. I H8 BLACKOUTS

someone once said, “If we put on all the generators in Nigeria at once, we’ll be able to give light to the whole of Africa all at once”.

We therefore can interpret it as “If we put all on the generators in Nigeria at once, Yar’adua will become the leader of the whole of Africa all at once”

sir your idea is wonderful. i love it. sometimes one begin to think if our leaders dont have eyes to see or ears to hear or friends and aides to tell them about what is happening around. or is it that they have determined before they came into office to just make things worse than they met it.i believe ur idea may change things….God bless our country.

These problems are generic and catastrophic. even a growing child knows toady that Nigeria needs a turn around. but one thing that i’m very optimistic about it that it starts here-THE NIGERIAN DREAM! Where do i see Nigeria few years from now? (HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT/ EMPOWERMENT, HEALTH, SOURCES OF INCOME, LEADERSHIP, EDUCATION, etc) see every great country is, because there is a defination of where they are going and these destinations are incoporated in every individuals day to day affair. Pastor Sam Adeyemi says “a dream is a mental picture of a preferrable future”. but i thought it wise to paraphrase it thus “a dream is a mental picture of a preferrable future that you can feature”. it becomes useless and unrealistic if you do not see yourself as being instrumental to the actualization of a future you picture. see i’m convinced beyond an atom of doubt that GREAT NIGERIA WILL GET THERE! but it begins with seeing youself as being part of the ACTORS AND INITIATORS. No Messiah is coming again, we are the last Messiahs God has sent to deliver Nigera. yes we can lets start from somewhere so we can get to somewhere. God help us o!

@omozele. thank God for your life but there is still something i love to stress emphatically and it is this notion that we do not have any thing to offerthe world. see even the most unproductive Nigerian (if at all any one exists, which i do not believe) have somany things to offer, the mere fact that some faceless strangers that do not understand the reality and integrity of a POWERFUL nation like ours go around painting a notoroius picture of us do not make it true.
secondly, the mere fact that something is universally accepted as right does not make it right in its real sense. it they (oyinbo) think we are bad it does not make us bad in the real sense of it. i tell people that if some Nigerians have proven themselves dependable then there is a cause to hope for. we are as good as we thimk ourselves to be.

REBUILDING THE BROKEN WALL OF OUR DEMOCRACY!
Nigeria has endured the pains and ills of this tool of wickedness we call “demon dey craze” for too long. we are celebrating the tool our politically elected officers are using to deprive us of our
Fundamental Human Rights; the weapon of mass destruction used by our leaders.
we cannot afford to continue like this. the day must go when we allow ourselves to be cajoled by sweet talkers and deceivers, wolves in sheep clothing, killers and breakers of the law. Our democracy mus produce qualitative, dependable and reputable leaders. the dividends of democracy must be felt in every nuke and cranny of this country and beyond.
our leaders must be made to hear the truth and live by the truth.
the days of slavery must go, where leaders are not sensitive to the plight of their followers.
DEMOCRACY HAS COME TO STAY AND WE MUST ENJOY THE DIVIDENDS THEREOF.

Great words. its amazing that since our independence almost 4osomething years now, we havent had power for a full day. one problem our leaders have when they come into office is because they all have many visions with little time and at the end of the day, they achieve nothing.many industries are packing up now because they spend most of their finance in buying diesel to run generators including phcn. power is indeed all we need.
