“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle
Everytime I read that quote, I keep falling in love with it over and over again. It’s so true, and the more you look, the more you actually see. Repetition is said to be the mother of skill. By consistently exposing your mind to developmental information, you will grow, your awareness will increase, you will become less fearful, more passionate, more focused, better skilled, more unique and connect with a meaningful sense of existence.
Do you know that by visiting this site and reading for 5mins daily without fail you can significantly improve yourself? You probably won’t notice it, because the increases will happen daily. The day it will become clear how much you have improved is when you get an opportunity to relate with a friend you have not seen in 30 days.
Have you ever had of RAS? Current research about the human brain is giving insights into many things that were once secrets to man. Most of us go through our education without understanding how we function. Can you imagine that? We learn how a car functions, how the clutch works, the brakes, the steering, the gear box e.t.c. and we don’t know how our brains, eyes and ears work and how we can make the most of them. There is a lot of value into gaining insight into the working of our brains and capitalizing on this knowledge. This is by the way.
The RAS is the Reticular Activating System, this is a part of your brain (in lay terms) responsible for sorting and prioritizing the information that reaches your conciousness. For example, there are many times we look, but don’t see, and there are many times we hear but don’t understand, this is the RAS at work. There have been times when you enter a room, there are lots of noises and sound in the room that make it difficult to even hear yourself, but someone from a corner somewhere calls your name and you turn…that was your RAS at work. Because we cannot accomodate everything that faces our senses our RAS swings to action to minimize what bombards us. Where am I going with this? Read on.
The same way we are bombarded with sights, voices, feelings and all, we are also bombarded with opportunities for growth, advancement, business, networks and all. Our RAS is tuned to respond only to that which is current in our minds. For example, when you set develop interest and go out of your way to actually take a closer look at a particular car, you suddenly go to town the next day and you begin to see that particular type of car more frequently 🙂 Did you smile? You know why? It’s not because the car became mass produced, it’s because you hadn’t developed interest or given it recency in your mind to activate your RAS.
By coming here everyday for 5-10 mins, you give your mind recency and interests in things that will truely improve you, and serependitously the opportunities will become visible in the cause of your day to advance you. I’m so sure of this, I can take a bet on it :). What you feed your mind on, your eyes and even your ears, conditions your RAS. The reason why 1 person in a neigbhourhood seemingly makes the most of all the opportunities is because he/she is the only one seeing it. What do you see, ear, or process daily? Reading these prepares you for when the teacher will appear.

…and everything suddenly begins to make sense.
we truly are “the masters of our fates” and “the captains of our souls”
5 mins every day will go a long way in improving your outlook to life and its problems.
Our brains are being under utilized and we need to understand how it functions to maximize its use.
…… reality check.Great exposition on how one can maximise the use of the brain.
5 – 10 minutes daily will be close to two weeks of training (Working Hours) at the end of one year.
I’m getting committed to feeding my RAS with the right stuff…
Very, true. It would help to achieve a positive mental attitude. I would ensure i cultivate this habit.
I really appreciate what you are doing.
Keep it up!!!!
I believe the greatest word I have heard and learnt from you till date is “repetition is the mother of skill”.
I can boldly say that the more your thirst, the more significant your life becomes; you will not only build meaningful relationships but you will have stamina to sustain them.
that quote by aristotle is very powerful if fully understood. it means that someone doesnt just stumble on excellence. it is nurtured and cultivated by a daily habit. everyone certailnly wants excellence but not everyone has the right habits.
That was a excellent post. I don’t agree with every single thing that you said but still good nonetheless. On a side note, I am so ecstatic that the NFL is back. It seems like I been waiting forever. This has to be my favorite time of the year. Sorry, I’m rambling. lol
