How not to Sacrifice the Future

Pat Utomi

I just read an article written by one of my mentors – A presidential speech. I was very impressed, at the intelligence behind the putting together of the words, As I read, my heart blessed Nigeria, we have talented men, we are indeed a blessed Nation. As I read, I thought about our country, I seperated the ideal from the real, and wondered if we as a nation will give a chance to change? I wondered if the military will ever allow a civilian to be commander in chief of the armed forces. I wondered if we were free as citizens of this nation. I also wondered why this man was risking his life, I wondered why volounteering to help could be suicidal. I wondered…
Many of us believe that leadership in our country is not about the votes, that it’s who the powers that be favour, but are we truely without choice? As I speak I have not been able to register…as passionate as I am, but I will, even if it means going to do it in iyanfoworogi. Comorades, we are at a critical hour in the evolution of the destinies of our children. They will not forgive us, if we share with them the woes of better pasts! This article from Pat Utomi moved me today. I don’t know if Nigerians consider themselves worthy of a leader with integrity, a heart for the common man, an intellectual, a business leader or a servant leader, but there is one thing I know the future of this nation lies in whatever pushes the button of the generation between 18-40!

In a similar fate with Winston Churchil during the utter confusion that faced the English army during the second world war -1000yrs from now, when the history of Nigeria is being reveiwed, let men read about these times, and let them say of us, this was the nations finest hour. This was the time when with one resolve, Nigerians cast a vote for their future and didn’t leave it in the hands of the government!

“Let The Rainbow Take Shape” — Pat Utomi

[Speech delivered by presidential aspirant Prof. Pat Utomi at send-forth rally at the Oshimili South Local Government arcade, Nnebisi road Asaba on December 1, 2006]

Protocols.

From the deep creeks of the Niger Delta to the sandy dunes that border the receding Lake Chad, and the bush paths that make it hard to tell whether it is the soil of Benin Republic or that of Nigeria’s Kwara State and the mountain ranges that allow us a glimpse of Benue, Cross Rivers State, and in fact Cameroon, I greet you the varied, the gifted and the long suffering people of our beloved country. I salute you in great tribute as I acknowledge that the moment is now for identifying where the rain began to wet our heads and that acting jointly we may draw down the evidence that it is time to play because the rain is gone – the rainbow.

I thank you who have come from great distances to gather in the quest for reasoning together on how to escape this rain that has hammered down so hard on us that a country which should be prosperous is inhabited by some of the poorest people on earth. Folklore tells us that in the abundance of water the fool is thirsty. But we are thirsty with water everywhere; there is soap in our eyes irritating those vital organs even though we are in a pool of water. Reflect, my people; reflect. Unless we can put on thinking caps ours may be like the sad story of some of our regional compatriots who watched, in denial about predicted doom, until they were consumed by it.

Such ominous portends about us too have rung out. Many of us remain unconcerned, or convinced that our personal circumstances will shield us from whatever may come. But I urge you to look at people who thought like them a few years ago in Cote d’voire and a few years earlier still, in Liberia. It is these reflections that led me to stand from the comforts of my immediate environment, persuaded that on the raising of an army of servant leaders dedicated to making the true needs of the people the essence of public life and deeply passionate that advancing the Common Good could save the fast rushing Nigerian train from the precipice.
Prof. Pat Utomi for President!

I have since embarked on a tour of this vast country, talking to the rich, the poor, the women, the men, the young and the old, in languages I could speak and in those I could not speak. I discovered an amazing thing; we all want similar things. How we want them may differ, but in brotherhood we stand in seeking a better future for our children, a reduction in the toil with which we eke out an improved quality of life for ourselves.

The years of innocence have been consumed by the dark clouds of corruption, and the despising of intellect and people of ideas. The result is clear. Instead of hospitals we have homes of death; in place of schools, we have sheds of unlearning and illiteracy; rather than export food and agricultural produce as we used to we have become the world’s biggest importer of Rice and even Palm Seedlings that were taken from here have sent back their grandchildren as imported oil from Malaysia. Tell me, my people, how long shall we kill our prophets and wander in the wilderness.
Prof. Pat Utomi for President!

As I traveled around the country, consulting and listening to the people I felt the pain of this blessed land; I heard the cries of little children, innocents who did not choose to be born here, and felt the agony of mothers who could not provide, and the anguish of widows deprived of what little they had to live on. It became clear to me that it would be hard for me on judgment day if I did not come forward and say to you that you have a choice.

Nigeria needs a revolution. Nigerians must arise and throw off the yoke of leaders who do not care, who may not know, and who in greed and mindless selfishness hold them in bondage, sacrificing even the future of their own children because they lack the wisdom to see that even their own children, no matter how much of the public treasure they despoil, are likely victims of a mortgaged future. It is a revolution we can accomplish without a shot being fired. I have stood up to be counted in offering myself as willing to go forth and contest the market place of ideas with my vision of a new Nigeria. If that vision, which we shall offer on Monday pleases you then I would in deep humility go forward as your servant to contest elections for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But there is much work to do.
Prof. Pat Utomi for President!

Many times when change has become imperative in Africa we have failed the people badly because self-centered elite hold on to fiefdoms fractured political parties are reluctant to coalesce into one solid opposition block. FORD in Kenya went down that path and left a tired Arap Moi regime in power. Even in Nigeria our previous democratic incarnations suffered from this disease. I have therefore deliberately encouraged the road to a coalition of interests since I indicated interest in participating in partisan politics. It has been a big challenge managing egos in that quest to evolve structure that will best serve the desperate desire of the Nigerian people for change which was so palpable as I toured the country.

But I must thank those who I pressured with these burden. They include Chief Okey Nwosu, Chairman of ADC, leaders of AC, Chairman of Union of Political Parties, Chief Okpara, Chief Olu Falae, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, Dr. John Obayuwana and other too numerous to be named.

It is my fervent hope and prayer, for the sake of the Nigerian people, that this effort not be in vain because of narrow mindedness. Only a Rainbow, that coalition of colours in the spectrum will signal that the rain is about to stop beating the Nigerian people.

Your royal highnesses, Chiefs, Honourables, Distinguish Ladies and Gentlemen I have a dream of a country radically different from what we have now. A country where the youth have hope, the elder have contentment and the families have peace and joy, and have a dream of a country where justice reign and the rule of law is taken as a fact of life. I have a dream of progress, prosperity and the elevation of the dignity of the human person such that strife which is the hallmark of present Nigerian life recedes into only remembrance of history as on educated middle class for bread that it is a majority of the people drive a globally competitive economy. I am most grateful that you have given so generously of yourself on this working day to send me forth into the political arena to seek to make these dreams come true.

May God bless you, bless your children and bless our dear country.

– Pat Utomi.

    Friends,

The future style of our nation is in our hands. Only the discerning will see and clear his path. It’s time for the rainbow to take shape. Let’s refuse to fold our hands and watch our the future of this great nation is get looted beyond redemption.

I have heard of the rainbow coalition in Kenya that delivered the people of Kenya from the hands of tyrants. In our case, it is not a coalition against a person or group of persons. It’s a coalition against a body of false ideologies; a coalition against corruption as an accepted way of life; a coalition against poverty; a coalition against celebrated looting; a coalition that delivers into the hands of every the gains of democracy and the benefits of being a Nigerian.

Prof. pat Utomi has offered himself for service. it’s a honor and a privilege to have a man of his caliber surrender to the Nigerian nation in service. let’s embrace him.

I remember spending close to 10minutes interacting directly with him (at the launch of Youth and Enterprise.. University of Ibadan, 2002) and in those 10minutes, I knew I had met a different kind of leader.

If it is true that a people get the kind of leader they deserve, I think that the we deserve a leader like Prof. Pat Utomi.

For the sakes of he the aged, young and the unborn…..Let the rainbow take shape.

Support Prof. Pat Utomi for President.

Deolu, where on earth is iyanfoworogi?

1 thing that has impressed me about the election 2007 is the fact that around the nation, in different capacity and levels of govt., men and women who are true leaders and genuine agents of change are running for office. I will actually vote on that day with a sense of pride and national identification

I think Iyafoworogi is in Osun State. I used to hear about it when I was in school. Anyway, I have been following Pat Utomi for some time now and I believe that he has a passion for this nation. But the question now is, “what can he do without the electorate”. I am referring to U and I. We all need to put all hands on desk to ensure that Nigerians get the leadership we so desire. Enough ot just complaining. Let’s match our talks with our actions.

It’s not just a matter of Nigerians ‘deserving’ a man of intergrity but Nigerians must ‘demand’ for one to get it.

I believe in the future of this Great country and I join to demand for a great leader. We are ‘too much’ to be led by mediocres.

An army of goats led by a lion will continually defeat an army of lions led by a goat. We are ‘lions’ and posterity will not forgive us if we allow goats to continually lead us.

Demand a great leader, vote wisely and don’t sacrifice the future (the future is today) of this great nation.

Heaven is watching and so are your descendants.

……..Deolu you are doing a great job, more ’empowerment’ to your elbow.

Finally, i don register to vote o! I did so this morning, had to come late to work cos of that. So, if you’re talking and have not registered to vote, you should exercise your right as a Nigerian citizen by doing so NOW. Now, I can confidently say i will make my vote count.

Refusing to register and vote is a sign of indifference to the future of our great nation.

Pat Utomi is indeed a leader with a servant heart.

Well struck point from the Prof himself, am not surprised ,such stuffs have been his identity for a long time.
To be honest, it will be very difficult to find a man of sound integrity like PAT UTOMI on this side of the world.
Lets take the advice of the Don and put on our thinking caps, especially as the petulant politicians continues politricking in preparation for 2007.

It is too later today to create today, but the time to begin to create tomorrow is today.

The responsibility lies squarely on our shoulders, we must take charge, we must stand up to be counted. If we fail to do our part then we deserve whatever kind of leader we get.

I agree 100% with Gbeborun of Lagos and Stephen Ojji, we must demand a man of integrity and much more than that we must go out to make it happen.

By the way: Is Iyanfoworogi an actual place? I thought it was one of them words we use in Yoruba to refer to wherever, something like Iboro or for a faceless person like Lagbaja.

A lot of times I always have to restrain myself from making such comments as “what’s this good man/ woman looking for in Naija politics?” If the good ones never get in, this country will definitely go to the dogs. So lets encourage the good ones, even better, let’s be the good ones! Tomorrow is in our hands….

Good speeches are okay. Prof. Pat Utomi is a man i admireed with passion. I have tried hard to follw him upon his presidential ambition.

Even though i am not a pessimist, i do believe we need prayers to turn the tide of the corruptible system. sorry for that word.

I have a lot of questions in mind daily? will it happen that the vote cast will determines who wins?

Will educated people who know what we need go out there to mobilize for vote and vote themselves?.

I have come to the conclusion thayt i will domy best, but what about others?

Iyanfoworogi for me means, anywhere in the world 🙂 It was a chemistry lecturer – called angel of chemistry, that was known for citing it in his classes as the town where some people went to school. I later discovered that it was a hamlet in the forests of Osun State.

Meanwhile, I have registered oh… all our talk will count as nothing except we register oh. I have seen the people registering, and if they are the ones that will vote, the elections don’t need to be rigged. But let’s ask ourselves, if the elections are going to be rigged, how come many politicians spend so much money to convince the masses to vote for them. Votes do count oh, it’s the people that don’t want us to vote that make us believe it won’t count.

hmm, bros its a great speech but that you and i know that great speeches do not make great leaders but your work over time should speak for itself. i am not a fan of the guy and i know that in Nigeria today, our votes dont really matter because of how bad our system is. well all the same, i wish him the very best.
