If you are feeling anxious about these new tax laws, you are not weak.
You are not dull.
You are not lazy.
You are simply overwhelmed.
One person online says, “Ignore it, nothing really changed.”
Another person says, “If you don’t comply now, government will block your account.”
Someone else says, “This one is only for big companies, not you.”
At this point, your head is full.
You don’t know:
• Who to believe
• What applies to you
• Where to even start
And the truth is simple:
>>Too many people are talking about these new tax laws without actually reading them.
Why Everybody Is Confused (And Why It’s Not Your Fault)
Nigeria didn’t just “adjust” tax rules.
Nigeria changed the entire tax system.
Between 2024 and 2025:
• Old tax laws were repealed
• New tax laws were passed
• Tax authorities were restructured
• Processes were unified
• Penalties were clearly spelled out
This is not vibes.
This is written law.
In fact, the Nigeria Tax Act, 2025 clearly states that it repeals major old laws like:
• Companies Income Tax Act
• Personal Income Tax Act
• Value Added Tax Act
• Stamp Duties Act
All of them are now merged into one main law.
That law is called Nigeria Tax Act, 2025
So when someone is still explaining tax to you using old rules, they are already behind.
Let Me Be Very Clear About My Authority Here
I am not guessing.
I am not summarising Twitter threads.
I am not repeating rumours.
I sat down and read the actual laws:
• Nigeria Tax Act, 2025
• Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025
• Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, 2025
• Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025
Page by page.
In this series, I will tell you exactly what the law says, in plain English, without fear-mongering.
If the law is clear, I will say so.
If the law is silent, I will say so.
If something does not apply to you, I will tell you plainly.
The First Truth You Must Understand
Everybody Who Earns, Buys, Sells, or Signs Documents Is Inside This Tax System
Let’s break it down simply.
If you:
• Work and earn salary
• Run a small business
• Sell goods online
• Freelance
• Own a company
• Buy things and pay VAT
• Sign agreements or contracts
👉 You are already inside the tax net.
The new laws did not “add” you.
They clarified how you are treated.
What the New Tax Laws Are Really Trying to Do
According to the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, the goal is simple:
“To provide uniform procedures for a consistent and efficient administration of tax laws in order to facilitate tax compliance by taxpayers.”
In normal English, this means:
• One clear system
• Less confusion between federal and state taxes
• Clear filing rules
• Clear penalties
• More use of technology
So instead of ten different confusing methods, government wants one clear process.
Example So You Understand It Clearly
Imagine this:
You are 22 years old.
You sell clothes on Instagram.
You also do small graphics jobs on the side.
Before:
• You didn’t know if you needed to register
• You didn’t know who to pay
• You didn’t know what would happen if you ignored everything
Now:
• The law says every taxable person must register and have a Tax ID (TIN)
• That Tax ID is used for filing, contracts, banking, and official transactions
This is not opinion.
It is written in Section 4 and 7 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025
The Part People Don’t Like to Hear (But Must Hear)
Ignorance Is No Longer an Excuse
The law now clearly lists penalties for things like:
• Not registering
• Not filing returns
• Not keeping records
• Not remitting tax deducted
These are not threats.
They are written consequences.
For example, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025 creates specific offences and penalties for failure to comply
That means:
• “I didn’t know” will not save you
• “Nobody told me” will not work
• “I’m small” is not a defence
But here is the good news 👇
The Good News Nobody Is Talking About
The same laws also:
• Define your rights as a taxpayer
• Create a Tax Appeal Tribunal
• Create a Tax Ombud to protect taxpayers from abuse
This is provided for in the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025
Meaning:
• Tax authorities also have limits
• You can challenge wrong assessments
• You are not powerless
