The Power of Words

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”

Does it not amaze you that the entire world was formed with words? In a chronicle of events that led to the creation of the world, the authoritative book on earth - The bible, gives an interesting account. Interesting because in one breath, it records that God worked for 6 days, and in the same breath it alludes that all that God did, was to speak. I wondered when I was younger why God will say something and then it would be evening and it would be reckoned that he had finished the work for the day. He kept up with this work at this pace, and eventually on the seventh day, he had to rest.

What activity did God engage in to create the earth? Speaking! God spoke order into chaos, tangible into the void and light into the darkness. He spoke one component of the earth into existence one by one by his words. An historical reference book actually says that God said it, and kept on saying it, until he could see it. No wonder it was called work. I discovered by experience that when you make concious effort to confess some set of words everyday in the bid to create, it’s no mean fit.

I have read quite a number of books that allude to the power of the use of words in the creative process. I have also experienced it first hand myself. I can also point to a number of people in society whose rise and indeed fall was predicated on words that proceeded from their mouths. It is true that life and death are in the power of the tongue. In the few words ahead you are about to read, are my findings about words and how you can use them to create your future…

1. You have the powers to create or destroy with your words.

The entire creative process was done with words. Everything that is visible in the world today was once invisible. Every visible product is a manifestation of something that had been in the recess of someone’s mind for long. The word manifestation means to bring out with the hands, to make real. Words are a crucial bridge in translating thoughts into reality. Words have a profound effect on the human mind, and the mind is where the creative function is executed. History keeps records of people who have been healed with words and cursed with words, trees that had dried up on the account of words. I remember the story one of my guardians told me about one of his lecturers who studied yoruba, and at PHD level defended his research publicly on the subject - epe (meaning curse). In his project defense, he brought in a butterfly and cursed the butterfly before the panel. The butterfly dropped dead! Go learn about incantations, go check out what the bible says about the power of words. You words have power - if only you’ll learn to use it.

2. Whatever you confess consistently will happen.

Believe it! I remember when at the age of 14, I found God. I was so excited about my new found faith, I started reading my bible, and wanted so much to prove everything I read right. When I read that I was the head and not the tail, and that I had more understanding than my teachers, I also stumbled on the fact that kings were meant to be my nursing fathers and queens mhy nursing mothers, I started confessing these regularly. I said it so much, that it started sounding like a commandment :). Before long my life started to conform to those standards. From my SS1 till I graudated from University, I was in top academic form and I enjoyed one scholarship or the other. I recall so many things I have said with consistency since then. Truly, a mans life will be satisfied with good things by the fruit of his lips. What you say you will see.

3. Whatever you hear regularly will transform you.

Your ears are connected to your heart. Even if you are not the one calling out the words yourself, for the fact that it’s regularly reaching your ears, it will either build faith or fear. The way to change your life is to change your mind. By changing Abrams name to Abraham, one of the most profound effects it had on Abraham was hearing people calling him Abraham - Father of many nations. He heard it and heard it, until it sank so much into him, that he couldn’t but be the father of many nations. A 100yr old man with a 90yr old woman were able to produce a child, simply because they were transformed by what they had heard repeatedly.

4. Your words are the programming language that your mind understands.

Have you ever heard of the time NeuroLingusitic Programming? In simple terms, it means that your brain and neuro zones can be programmed by your lingua… by your words. You can become a more confident, bolder, better, stronger and richer person, by conciously programming it to be so. Programming involves using particular syntaxes that the mind understands, to code the mind to behave in a particular behaviour. Just like normal programming, there are different types of programming languages, our ability to use them appropriately can make the difference between the pit and the palace.

5. Who you are today is the aggregate of your words.

Without a shadow of doubt, I am an aggregate of the words I have spoken. My life is moving in the direction of my most predominant thought. My predominant thought became predominant because I have said it and said it and said it. I’m involved in creation, you can too. If you you will die young, you will die young, if you entertain poverty, you will experience it. Our lives are the product of what we have programmed it conciously or unconciously to be. when we don’t take time to conciously cultivate our mind, weeds will grow naturally. Indecision, is a decision! What words are you speaking today? Are they words that can create the future you desire? Or are you one of those that believes in que cera cera? If indeed our lives will stumble and bumble in the direction of our words, where are you heading right now?

Don’t wait for life to usher you where it pleases, join those who understand the powers in their tongues… and let’s create the next 20-70yrs together.

Spot on! it couldn’t have been said any better.

Bishop Oyedepo once said that what you cann’t confess, you cann’t handle and if ur mouth cann’t say it, it will be too big for ur hands to carry it.

Pastor Chris puts it this way, that ur words are ur transportation fare to ur destiny. Shut ur mouth and u shut ur destiny.

    Luv u!

  3. Olofin responds:

Words are powerful and are vital to the development of human existence. Therefore your words will determine where you’ll be and what becomes of you. Speak positive words to create a future you desire.

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

This story will further illustrates my point better:

“A group of frogs was traveling through the woods and two of them fell into a deep pit. All the other frogs gathered around the pit. When they saw how deep the pit was, they told the unfortunate frogs they would never get out. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and simply gave up. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and suffering and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs asked him, “Why did you continue jumping? Didn’t you hear us?” The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time”.

    This story teaches us:

    1. That we should not succumb to the environment we found ourselves to give up on our believe and aspirations, instead we should learn to speak positive words at those point/moment when everyone around us keeps telling us to hang up.

    2. When the going is tough, learn to speak positive words to the situation, despite the environment that keeps saying: give up, give up, its just for the time being, it won’t last, you will soon realize that its just a trial of your faith, the words you speak surely become the end result.

3 Don’t allow people to usher you in a negative direction rather continue to keep deaf ears, take a bold decision and your life will be great.

    Inspiring… keep it up Deolu

  4. Ademola responds:

  5. Tunbosun responds:

U know what crossed my mind going to work this morning(before I read this post) was that,If one can make a conscious effort to make positive affirmations 5 mins before sleep it will go along way in changing the very life that does that.
You surely are hitting the nail at the right spot.Your post was a product of a sound mind.

  6. daplus responds:

deolu, morning, thanks for another insightful topic, i just want to share my experience on this matter:
There was a time in my family life where everything was totally down, and i remember then always urging my father and brothers on then, “everything go better, that something good was on the way”. i always telling him this, everytime he starts to complain, and i must tell you, i still wonder about the way things turned out to be in less than 3yrs, the transformation is even going on still, everything changed totally, from managing 1meal per day, to now having too much and even giving out, i thank GOD for this.
Also a second experience, when i was small i remember an occassion, where one of my uncle sent me to one new generation bank then, and that was the first time i visited the bank, and i told myself i am going to work inthis bank and “wholla”, here i am now walking for the bank, without much stress.
To my fellow readers, please always try and encourage others, because you do not know what powers your words might impact intheir lives. Thank you, deolu and keep up the good work.

  7. emeka responds:

u brought it on deolu.i cant agree with u more..i remember a time my course mate called to tell me that i failed a course which is prerequisite and immediately i told him that it was a joke.i wrote a letter to the HOD asking for a review of the result and without asking for further assistance from any lecturer,4weeks later i had a C.before then, i kept saying to myself “i have more understandin than my teachers..i’m a success”…really words creates our world…
the words that i speak daily goes ahead of me to make things work together for my good..it works.
thank you deolu for this wonderful piece.

  8. Christopher responds:

    Deolu,
You inspire me everyday ,i almost find it diffcult to believe this is the guy i just met casually and he related with me like he was just the guy next door meanwhile he is not. U are truly amazing and a whole lot inspiring!!!!!! keep up the good work

  9. Awele responds:

Very true word. I have testimonies to the fact that what you say you get. If everyone lived with the consciousness that ” life and death are in the power of the tounge…” we’ll be all the more careful about what we say and think

  10. Gbenguz responds:

    Dear Dee,This is awesome!
I will afresh start reapplying the principles and reinforce them in my children the way you did at age 14.
May the Lord continue to make you a blessing to this generation .AMEN

  11. chuks ugoji responds:

Your sure a blessing to our generation.Just kip the flag flying

  12. Dele Ibikunle responds:

Of a Truth, death and Life are in the power of the tongue! It is our responsibility to choose what we want. It seems so simple, yet many have been destroyed by this.
Deolu, thanks for bringing this up.

  13. janet responds:
