Gunning for the 1%

“He came unto his own, and his own received him not” - John 1:11

There is a parable in the bible that beats me, it’s a story that Jesus told his disciples about the shepherd that had 100 sheep, lost one and left the 99 to go for that one. He was actually describing himself, and that was supposed to be the trait of a good shepherd. There are many ways to look at it, but however way you look at it, it means that, 1% is important too, and is worth the effort. I’m sure you are wondering where I’m going with this. I’m actually trying hard to compress thoughts that could have been 6 posts into one, I hope when I finish, we all arrive on the same page. For this post, I’m gunning for the last 1%.

Some time last year, we had a teenagers teachers meeting in my church, it was an opportunity for all of us to unwind, and get to know ourselves better. It was also an opportunity to plan ahead. In this meeting I heard something I had heard before, but it shocked me afresh. All the teachers were split into two opposite categories when it came to their perspectives about me. One category, believed that I am a jovial, down to earth, easy going, unassuming person (esa), while the other category, the ones that actually shocked me, believed that I was completely different. Here were some of the remarks - “I had the impression that you were a very serious and very intelligent person, and I better know what I want to say well before approaching you”, “one day, my husband and I drove past your car on the high way, my husband was shocked that you were actually laughing loud in the car, we didn’t think you could laugh”, “I felt you were good, but arrogant”, “I have known you for a long time, what I thought then, and what I know now, are completely different” e.t.c. It shocked me that people still had this perception of me, despite a deliberate attempt at otherwise. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll never reduce who I am to make another feel better. I believe in liberating others by my fearlessness, not by compromise. This event reminded me of a similar comment I got from one of my secondary school classmates 2yrs after I finished. I was stunned that some people actually saw me as unapproachable. If only they knew.

Now, this is not entirely about me, it’s about you too. There are many people around you, who can be of tremendous advantage to you, if only you take off that perception that someone handed you, and reached out to them. More often than not, we are surrounded by our oasis, our help, our opportunities, but often, we do not see them. I know for a fact that majority of the people who read from here, know that they can call me, mail me, or even come over to see me, but there is a 1% that think otherwise. Why - because someone said so? Because you have a complex? Or because I’m expected to be smart and then arrogant. Don’t be deceived, I am nothing and no one, outside of my willingness to help, to be a blessing and to support others achieve their God given goals. I am a steward of all that I am and all that I have, I own nothing. When I get called from out of sleep, I pause and answer with customer service ethics, it’s that bad. I make myself a servant to those I want to help, it’s the way my master says to do it. I can’t please everybody even if I tried, but at least, I can gun for that 1%. Of course from time to time, I know how also to grab the weep and be firm too, but I’m not all that.

In the spirit of approachability :) I have some offers I’m giving this coming week.

1. Financial Intelligence Event - Cashflow 101. 20 of us will be having the time of our lives from the 28th of May to the 29th of May (Monday, Tuesday). We have chosen the Elomaz Hotel, it’s brand new, and it’s just beside Planet 1 in Maryland. It’s a non-profit event, and it’s going to be a learning experience.

2. This Sunday we’ll be having free Clubfreedom and 6k4you seminars. We’ll be discussing board dynamics, how to manage your down lines, how to forward people on CF, how to read revolving travel tables, how to cash out when you cycle e.t.c. It’s going to be FREE, and only people who indicate their interest in coming will be welcome. The seminar will be holding by 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm respectively. If you are interested, just indicate here, your full name and time will suffice. The training will hold at Generis Solutions Training room, 5th Floor L’Monarch Plaza (Same building with LG), Salvation B/Stop Opebi, Ikeja.

I’m also toying with the idea of having a small 2hrs meeting with interested participants on the 3rd of June (Saturday - perhaps 2pm), this meeting would be about the High Yield Investment Programs in Nigeria and clear perspectives about each of them. We’ll also debate on, issues bordering on, “Is it right to participate?”, “What exactly are they doing?” e.t.c. This will depend on interest.

There are a number of other things coming up soon that you should watch out for, some of them are exclusively for our club members though, like cheap and choice land in Abuja :). You’ll be pleasantly suprised.

I hope I have been able to redeem my PR with the 1% ;), and I hope many will take advantage of these FREE opportunities.

    Deolu:

Hi there, that was a very inspiring read.

I have never thought about it in so much depth, but it’s true that if we knew what people really thought of us it would be quite a wake up call. Even if only one percent of those around us thought things about us which we deem untrue.

The tough thing about it is that one person can be so many things, and typically each relationships that I have with each friend is different. So, it must be easy for people to think so many differnt things about us.

I guess one question to ponder is would it be desirable to have everyone think the same thing about us? If it were so, I guess we might all want to think of ourselves as miniature public relations agencies…(just a thought, aye?)

Anyhow, thanks D, for your wonderful and heartfelt writing. Thanks too for joing Africa Enterprising Blog Network, I hope to talk about your wonderful work very soon!

Hmmm… another deep one from your abyss of intellect. Well done sir.
To add to this, i’ll simply say ” DONT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER”.
People are a lot morethan you think them to be, i have learnt over the years to atleast get to know ’someone’ b4 jumping into conclusions about ‘them’, you never know, that ONE you despise, might be the answer to your problem!!!

  4. smilie responds:

I am particularly interested in cheap (affordable) choice landed property in Abuja. I must say that you could also give us an insight into where we could get those in Lagos as well….That’s if you know of any.

You can book for as many of your down lines as you believe will need it, just book here… I guess that is what Morakinyo means by proxy.

Someone will comb though… name (or nickname) and time is all we need.

The other programs will be holding as well, I’ll fill you in as the date approaches. For the financial intelligence 101, anyone who has a board and wants to come with it should notify me, this way we can actually make it a tournament. And with Monday being a public holiday who says we can’t start a little earlier.

    Cheers All

    Hi Deolu,
I always knew you were a blessing waiting to happen to millions in our generation. I knew you from your P&G days and although you may not remember me clearly any more, I’d love to say you’re worth paying attention to.

“Gunning for the 1 %” is revealing and insightful. A great read. However, perhaps while the Shepherd (Jesus) went after the lost sheep, the other 99 were already planning to crucify Him. What this means is that we can never hope to please everyone, as oftentimes, our expressions of love are mistaken for selfishness. May God help us.

Deolu pls count me in on all those freebies above. Sunday 3pm if fine for me, thanks.

    Best regards,
    Olajide Olaoluwa.
