The 8th Day of the Week

Yes you read the title correctly, in some parts of the world there are 8 days in a week. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Public Holiday! In Nigeria here for example tomorrow is going to be the 5th public holiday in April alone. Isn’t that already doing more than being the 8th day of week?

I remember how excited I used to get as a regular employee about public holidays. It was another day to rest from work, it was the replacement of the midterm holidays and long holidays we used to enjoy back in school. For those of us that went to the great university, we had so many strikes and induced breaks that life right now doesn’t seem fair :) But seriously, where are we going with this current holiday?

There are many postulations already. Some say it’s meant to stop Atiku from being a part of the presidential race, since his day of judgment has been declared a public holiday. Some say it’s meant to help people that need to travel to vote do so, some say it’s to set up the stage for grand style rigging…or to check it. What do you say?

Where in the world do people get to find out that the next two days are public holidays only at 4pm of the day before? I’m not a political strategist, but I know that the words surprise, startle, shock and sudden are used to sweep opponents off their grounds. It’s like the roar of the lion, it startles the prey into the lions hands.

The much awaited 2007 elections are here, from the look of adverts on the Television these days, there seem to be two vacant roles, the Governor of Lagos and the President of Nigeria. Every vote we cast today is what our children will grow up to know. I feel ashamed these days when light goes and my 2yrs plus daughter shouts - “Nepa!” Vote wisely, your vote is the control you have over the future of Nigeria.

  1. Lolo responds:

Whatever is the reason behind the public holiday(s)! Let everyone go out there on Saturday and vote wisely. Vote your conscience. Vote for credible leaders, a man(or woman) with character, values and most importantly, the FEAR of God. A society deserves the kind of leaders it gets. And that start by you playing your own role actively.

  2. Gbubemi responds:

Na wa o! Did you say the 5th public holiday in April? don’t stop counting cos our dear supreme ruler may just declare the whole of next week a holiday! I found the excuse so cheap.. so that people can travel for the election? what nonsense. If I travelled to get registered for the elections, shouldn’t I have made personal plans to travel again for the elections? besides, why must I need 2 whole days to travel when my village isn’t in Australia? I think we have given that man too much leg room and so he now does as he pleases, such a pity for us as a nation. Please let’s just all go out and vote for our conscience.

  3. Tosin responds:

Yes, that’s the advice . . . make sure you go out to vote as long as you have been registered, eligible to vote.

Don’t be deceived into staying indoors on election days as this will clearly give room for the unwanted elements to cheaply go home with undeserved victory. You may only have to leave the scene once you cast your vote. It’s not actually your duty to do monitoring of votes. Do your best and leave the rest to God, nobe so?

We all have this great responsibility to at least cast our votes . . . let’s have our say, even if they may end up having their way. But someday, things will change and the true potential of our votes will be let loose.

  4. Mutiu responds:

Whatever the reason may be, Nigerians needs to go out enmasse and vote not minding whether the elections will be rigged or not. We need leaders who can think and give the citizery the basic amenities such as electricity, water, etc.

  5. Dumsky responds:

    Hi all,
Heard some jist about people still being able to register for the elections? Does anyone know if this is true aas not all of us were lucky to register initially.
    Deolu,
How you dey now? Happy holidays.

  6. OpeOnifade responds:

    This shows:

how much value we place on time!
how little respect the government has for citizens’ plans
how personal problems never remain as private concerns
how a nation who regards banking and not education or justice or supreme court services as “essential services” experiences degenerating value system.

    What do you think?

  7. Niji Yemi responds:

sincerely am perplexed by the so called public holiday…..anyway its another DAY of rest and a day to keep off from the campaign and rally environs.

whatever might be the motive behind the so-called holiday, the JUDICIARY must uphold JUSTICE.

….AND WE MUST REMEMBER THAT OUR VOTE IS OUR RIGHT.

  8. Otome Oyo responds:

E ku igbadun, enjoy the holidays while they last I remember 2005 when all holidays fell on weekends and we got no “compensation” during the week. More importantly I miss home cause I won’t get the chance to vote and contribute to change. I read the papers and talk to family everyday and it just seems to be getting worse despite the efforts put in. I trust that things will improve but please my people do not be dissuaded by naysayers with their words of rigging, go out and vote and if possible wait for the votes to be counted (I remember they used to do that at the polling booth) our generation is too precious and we must take charge now.

  9. gbenga saseun responds:

Well, deolu i quite agree with you, because that great university you went to is presently closed, and i know this holiday is political because, declaring a public holiday makes the judgement of the supreme court invalid cos its a public holiday, well i believe the revolution has just started.

  10. Tioluwalase olumide responds:

Hi all. Happy election holidays! Na wa o! Some people are still bathing in d euphoria of these holidays and some are just cursing who ever is responsible. Am not happy because it has extended all my investments by 2 days! All said, pl lets go out n vote

  11. Tioluwalase olumide responds:

It will be on records that we played our parts. If they like let them rig all the want. God’s will be done.

  12. oLUYEMI aDEOSUN responds:

To be frank, i was disgusted about a public holiday declared by the federal goverment. I do not understand or appreciate the reason behind this. I hope they will not declare another public holiday next week for the presidential elections.

It appears to me that many people are more interested in Koro not becoming the governor than in voting in the right person.

I hope the best candidate will emerge….

  13. prosper responds:

    hmmm
lucky guys, well mine arent like dat, i fall under the so call essential duty, well i feel really bad about atiku’s case, hmm who said baba iyabo doesnt know what he was doing???? welll i m right here in the office, wishing y’all 1daful pub. hols

  14. Boso responds:

This is simply a blatant abuse of power. THere is no other way to describe it.

  15. Dumsky responds:

    Tioluwalase,
Alaways investment savvy. I feel you bro.
    Guys,
Truth is our nation needs prayers and divine internention now than ever before. The politicking in the country and more or less turned handling of the economy into child’s place whre decisions are made without any regard to the overall effect it could have on the economy. If you announce a public holiday a few minutes to the close of business that day,how are people supposed toprepare for this knowing fully well a lot of people don’t keep their money under their matresses anymore. Also, the number of manhours lost to the private and public sectors don’t seem to matter much. Things are actually more serious than they seem to be.

  16. bebe responds:

    Hi Guys,

this so called holiday is actually an insult on Nigerians cos i cant imagine y some1 will declare public holiday so that people can travel for the election (our I Q isnt that low!!!!!!!!!!!!! cos we all know the reason). so the pple that fall under the so called essential duty r not Nigerians?!! or they dont have the right to travel to their om town to vote as well?
the reason is too cheap and the annoying thing is that baba is aware that Nigerians know his main reason for the holiday but he doesnt give a hoot abt what we think.
Anyway, baba shld just remember that there’s a God up judging the affairs of men and he judges irrespective of position.i know he will fight for Nigerians cos we really need that divine intervention at this time.anyway, wishing u guys a luvly wkend sha.God is on the throne.shalom.

  17. Gbubemi responds:

You all know what? sometimes I wish we could have a repeat of the french revolution in Naija (but that’s a scary wish o, lol). It’s about time we all stood up as one people and revolted against all this nonsense. It’s bad enough that our president has reduced himself to nothing over this election process, and then he imposes his wishes on us at the last minute? It is obvious this is a public holiday that Nigerians could do without. I am almost certain that there will be a repeat next week since that is the “mother” of all elections. Please let’s just go and vote for newness in Lagos state particularly. The old hands that have nothing to show for their years in goverment (both current and past officials) need not come back in any guise, should they?

  18. Banji responds:

I wonder how people forget that there is GOD. The most high who sits up above watching the little games of his creations . Men, they better not get him angry else we hear a breaking news.

  19. wale responds:

    @ bebe

i agree with your comments but of the use of the word ‘baba’. Baba is often used for a respected matured man of integrity and wisdom…

as events unfold & the power that be keep insulting our very intelligence, am short of words right now…

i believe the liberation of this country by God’s grace is a function of time…

…and active participation (not just dishing out advice without action)

    …prayer too

    God bless Nigeria!
And All Who Truely wish her well!
